I saw something similar on 6.1.24. I changed the Radius server to a SUN
that was also running a squid web cache and acting as a router. Although
the SUN should have had the guts to do the job, every so often it got into
problems with the Radius authenitcation. The radius requests appeared to
timeout for reasonably long peiods perhaps about an hour. We are using
NIS+ and there were also problems with it during the period we were having
Radius problems, but the eventual solution to the radius problems was to
change the SUN that the Radius server ran on.

Sorry this is a bit vague - I don't deal with the Unix side, but can get
more details if it helps
