Folks, the limiting factor is the symbol rate. The max upstream for V90 and
K56flex is 31200bps and this limitation arises from the fact that the
maximum mandatory symbol rate is 3200 for upstream data. This is basically
a fallout from the standards process. Maybe it will change someday, but
pretty much every V.90 DSP vendor supports a max symbol rate of 3200.

A heck of a lot of work went into interoperability and standards compliance
for V.90. Since 3200 was the max mandatory rate, that is what each of the
vendors had to code to. All I can say in defense is that these things are a
lot more complicated that most of us think.
