Re: (ASCEND) V.90 Connect Speeds

There is no way I know of on the TNT to tell if a connection is V.90 other
than the xx.333 or xx.666. It is important to point out that even those
even number connect speeds can still be V.90.

The only way I know of is at the modem end and that depends on the modem
being used and it's capabilities. The Xircom and 3Com modems have the
capability of reporting true details/characteristics pertaining to its
connection.

To do this, you would have to make a connection using Hyperterminal and use
the ATDT command to establish the connection then issue the ATY11 for the
3Com (including all US Robotics 56kb modems) and the ATI11 command for the
Xircom to see connection details. These are pretty neat commands because
they report retrains requested, retrains accepted, number of speed changes
during each session, true transmit and receive speeds, protocol used to
establish connection and more. Each command, ATI11 and ATY11 do report
different results but the basics are there for each.

Also, I know that the Intel and Xircom modems have S register settings that
will force a V.90 connection.

One last note... listen to the modem tones. V.90 has a distinct (new) tone
that typically occurs twice. First there is the typical "DeDum" then the
normal modem negotation tones followed by a pause and two (usually two)
"Bongs". If the modem goes silent and the connection completes with a
connection higher than 33.6... usually that equates to a V.90 connection.
If additonal modem negotation tones follow the two "Bongs"... then expect
V.34. If you do not hear the "Bongs" but complete a connection above 33.6,
then you can bet it is a KFlex connection.

some speeds are valid for both protocols.
as someone previously posted to this mailing list:

K56Flex speeds are (32 + n*2)K like:
  32000, 34000 ... 48000, 50000, 52000, 54000, 56000.

V90 speeds are (28 + n*1.333...)K like:
  28000, 29333 ... 48000, 49.333, 50667, 52000, 53333, 54667, 56000
