Your ISP needs to have the IP number of the NAT in his /etc/hosts
file on the mail server. Any generic one will do, just as long as
it's there. We add all our pool IPs as say, pop1-54.gloryroad.net,
pop1-55.gloryroad.net, and so on.
Some mailers want to do reverse DNS for some reason and eventually
do work when they can't, but they try for a LONG time. Sticking the
possible addresses in the /etc/hosts is just a quick fix for the mail;
your ISP will have trouble with certain sites until he enables
reverse DNS on all the dialups.
This one got us when we added our first remote pop. As long as the
Max is on the same network with the server it doesn't exhibit this
problem, so it took us a while to find it.
Ours took equally long to connect when receiving mail too, so it
may not be the same problem, but it sure sounds like it.
