This is simply solved by picking a stable distribution of Linux and
supporting that. Redhat or Caldera would probably be a good choice.

I have customised my RedHat systems far less that I have customised my
Irix system.

I believe that there are orders of magnitude more Linux and BSD systems
used by ISP's that HP-UX or Irix.
