Even when you repair all those things (put them in a sane state), I
have found that Windows still lies to you about the connection not
yet being up.

When it says "Verifying User name and Password", you can actually wait
the normal amount of time (1-3 seconds) and start surfing, even though
Bill would like you to keep staring at that message for another 5-10
seconds before declaring you "connected".
