We've had varying success using K56 modems.  From connect speeds of
40,000 to 48K.  Unfortunately, this is only what windows reports.  If we
do a "show users" on our max4000 all users connecting with 56K modems
are showed as being connected at 32000 and the best transfer rates we
have seen is about around the 4K/sec which is about right for a 31200
connection (4 * 8 = 32000).  If this is the case, our 33.6 modems users
are getting better transfer rates than our 56K users.

Is there any other way to more accurately test the connect speeds?  Is
there some settings on our max that I can change to better our 56K
connections?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
