(ASCEND) Re: PC-Anywhere - Custom Protocol?

The port numbers are correct for the latest version, and there is an
update to the older version(s) you can get from Symantec to get them
working on these ports. The data connection is TCP and the status
connection is UDP.

If you are using packet filters and open these two ports, you should
have no problem. If you are using a application proxy and have the need
to get to multiple pcAnywhere server, then you might have a problem with
the status port being UDP.

The trick to this lies in knowing that you can disable the default
behavior of the client, i.e. to require status on the server to connect
to that server. To do this, you must add an entry to the registry
location:
	HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\pcANYWHERE\CurrentVersion\System

adding this dword value:

	TCPIPConnectIfUnknown

Add a data value of 1 for the new TCPIPConnectIfUnknown dword value.

I have used this and it works like a charm. If you are unable to get
status, you will not know if the server is currently in use. When you
try to connect, you will get an error telling you so.
