You could ask Ascend for a magical initialisation string which will fix
the problem in all cases.... NOT. Naturally its the modems that are at
fault. ;-)

However, the problem doesn't actually happen because Ascend can't
reproduce it. ;-)

Turn off VJ compression and turn on LQM. We've lately heard from Ascend
that VJ-compressed packets crossing different media get "illegally padded"
by other vendors' equipment.

Whether the padding is legal or not may be moot, but at the end of the
day, your users won't seize up if you don't do VJ and you do do LQM. You
can then leave it to the vendors to sort it out among themselves whoose
fault it is.
