(ASCEND) Problem with VJ Comp on older software?
Hi,
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but it wasn't in the FAQ.
This weekend I encountered an odd problem setting up an ISDN connection
between two Pipeline 50s. The symptom was that small streams of packets
like telnet sessions, pings, traceroutes, etc. would work just fine, but
constant streams of large packets (ftp, www, etc.) would come grinding to
a halt after a few seconds. snooping the network on the remote site and
the local site showed the remote packets going into the remote router but
never coming out of the local router.
After much hair pulling and checking and rechecking and rerechecking the
config at each end, I finally gave up on config problems and started
flipping different options to see if anything changed. (Keeping clear of
enabling Proxy Mode and RIP as I've been amply warned by Dave Rand that
he'd come after me with sharp objects if I did that.) When I turned off
VJ Comp on each end, suddenly everything worked perfectly. Turned it on,
and the symptom was back. Turned it off and perfect again.
Remote router is running 4.4, local is running 5.0B (brand spanking new).
Has anyone seen this annoying behavior before?
Speaking of which, how risky is it to upgrade a router to new software?
I've heard some horror stories about routers being turned into doorstops
by upgrades gone awry.
