(ASCEND) Weird Max1800/Stac phenomenon
Hi,
before eventually opening a TR for this now that we can reproduce it
reliably. We drive several S0 leased lines from a central Max1800.
There are P50s at the other ends, with Leased/Unused configurations.
The lines use MPP, LQM and usually worked great. However, we recog-
nized some small to medium packet loss on the lines when doing ping
probes and an occasional sluggishness with TCP traffic. All these
symptoms go instantly away as soon as we _disable_ Stac compression
on these lines. We first had the impression that the impact of the
effect depended on the number of connections the 1800 drives and
especially on how many of them were Stac compressed. But now we found
an example where the line effectively stalls a TCP connection, even if
it is the only line that is compressed. This is completely reproducable,
as soon as we switch the line to Stac and load the web site where it
happens, all TCP connections stall at the same position (after some
10 or 15 percent of some larger JPEGs). Switching Stac off again, and
all works flawless. We see that the packets are arriving at the remote
side, but they never arrive on our end.
Has anyone seen such phenomenon yet ? We were repeatedly told that the
1800 has no known problems of this kind, but we have observed them in
several cases with different units but couldn't really reproduce it when
needed. We are likely to open a TR on this, but maybe somebody on the
list knows a magic spell to avoid it (or the URL of a list of open TRs
and a vote forum for FRs on the Ascend WWW site, if it's already
existing ;)
Thanks,
Andre.
