I've had similar problems (usually with portables) and always attributed it
to weak power on the serial port. It seems that if the Pipe sends data, it
gets received, but if the PC sends data, it never makes it to the Pipe.

btw, I d/l'd the Configurator for Max and it crashed every single time I
ran it. I know it's beta, but jeez... it didn't even get past the 'starting
up' dialog.
