(ASCEND) Zoom 14.4 V.32bis modems...?

 Anyone run into problems getting these modems to dial in?  We have a
customer with a new (okay waaaaay used) that seems to dial in,
authenticate PAP fine then disconnect with win95 mentioning the
"incompatible protocols" errors... We've triple checked all the settings
and uninstalled and reinstalled DUN, the modem, etc. several times with
no success... any ideas?  A generic 33.6 modem we threw on there seems
to connect just fine..
