(ASCEND) Telco Equip/Customer Equipment Distances

I was recently presented with a situation where the telco was
putting in a fractional T-1 line for one of our customers. The
customer had followed my usual advice, and rack-mounted his gear
to make the installation an object of pride, rather than a mess
of tangled cables in a closet.

The telco installer wanted to wall-mount the usual PairGain remote
unit on the wall next to the rack, and was tackled by the customer
when he started to plug in his electric drill.

This raised a question - "How long can an RJ-48 cable be?" The
answer was hard to find, and may be a handy thing to know if you
run into a similar situation. This information is specific to
PairGain "HiGain Remote Units", which are very common customer
premise demarcation devices.

The PairGain-to-Ascend distance (be it a Pipeline, Max, whatever)
for an RJ-48 cable (be it a T-1 or a PRI) depends upon the gauge
of wire used in the cable:

Wire Size Max Distance to CSU/DSU, Pipeline, or Max/TNT/GRF
    --------- -------------------------------------------------
    #26 Wire 9,000 ft maximum
    #24 Wire 12,300 ft maximum
    #22 Wire 16,060 ft maximum
#19 Wire 22,730 ft maximum (#19 is "common" in Europe they say)

So, do be too concerned if the customer has a telephone closet far
away from where you want to put your gear. Forget about getting the telco
to rack-mount the PairGain. They LIKE wall-mounts.

"Next week, we are playing the Mozart..." "Are you sure we can Handel it?"
