(ASCEND) Truth or Fiction???
I was just scanning the Livingston site and stubbled across this. Is any
or all of this true? What I was really looking for was an ISP mailing
list.
Q. Don't Ascend and Cisco have "digital modem" offerings?
A.Other Remote Access Server (RAS) vendors confuse customers by calling
their integrated modems "digital" modems. However, they actually employ a
hybrid combination of analog modem chips from Rockwell or AT&T and
analog-to-digital converter chips, called CODECs. The CODEC converts the
digital PRI or channelized T1/E1 call signal into an analog signal, which
is then processed by the Rockwell analog chipset. These pseudo-digital
modems suffer from the same heat-related reliability problems and
initialization complexities as pure analog modems. In addition, their
digital-to-analog signal conversion slows performance.
Livingston's True Digital modem technology uses a DSP design that boosts
performance by eliminating analog-to-digital conversion latency, and
increases reliability by reducing heat dissipation by up to 90 percent
compared to Rockwell-based pseudo-digital modem solutions.
Q. How many True Digital modems can the PortMaster 3 support?
A.True Digital modem cards are high-density digital modems that support
either 8 or 10 V.34 modems per card. The PortMaster 3 can support up to
46 PRI T1 or 60 PRI E1 modems via six rear-panel expansion slots. Any
combination of modem cards can be used in any slot.
Q. Who developed the True Digital modem technology?
A.Livingston designed the True Digital modem technology using standard
off-the-shelf DSPs and widely compatible V.34 modem source code.
Livingston manufactures all True DigitalTM modem cards.
