If you're trying to install a Brother MFC scanner in Linux, and are having
issues getting xsane to recognize your scanner, try running
/usr/local/Brother/sane/setupSaneScan2 -i at the command line. This makes
sure that the driver/scanner is being recognized by sane  

Not sure if you tried that or not, but thought I would offer it up.
