+1 for Homerun boxes for OTA capture

+1 for MythTV as a backend recorder

I use XBMC 13 loaded onto Amazon FireTV boxes as a frontend, using the Myth
PVR plugin for XBMC

Once configured, this has a high WAF: one box and one remote provides OTA
Live, OTA DVR, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBOGO, etc etc.

I have not needed or tried them, but I gather that there are boxes which
are sold for the purpose of capturing gaming sessions from consoles that
have component in and myth support that can also be used to capture video
from digital cable, Dish, DirectTV et al. For this to work, you'd also need
to configure an IR blaster to change the channel on the cable/satellite
receiver which provides the feed to the capture device. This "analog hole"
workaround for the encryption of these signals is the only way to capture
and record some sources.

For some digital cable systems, Silicon Dust makes a box that can accept a
cablecard which does the decryption.
