Thunderbird uses the same api as Firefox to parse and display HTML messages. I haven't used TB in awhile, so I may be wrong, but they should be completely segregated. Are you solely killing the firefox process or others as well (using killall with a regex)? Have you checked bugs and the Arch forums?
