OK - I've been able to establish that it's actually firefox and/or
thunderbird that hand up the server. I kept a ssh login alive and
active all day and when it hung again, I started killing processes.
Gettign rid of Firefox returned the system to being responsive. Oddly,
thunderbird died too (shared library? no clue).

Still don't know what to do about it. But there we are . . .
