It's the opposite (which I like) of the more popular distros that all the cool kids are using. You start with nothing, and turn on services as needed versus starting with everything only having to shut things down. It's also fairly flexible as to what you want installed too. Min life support all the way up to everything & the kitchen sink. It defaults to run level 3 out of the box, but comes with a handful of different GUI's as well www.slackbuilds.org has been doing a really nice job providing build scripts for software not included in the stock distro. It's not for everyone, but I recommend it to anyone.
