Just because most Linux distributions default to a quick-format doesn't 
make Linux in general faster. When I get a new drive, or even more so when 
I'm repurposing a fairly OLD drive, I tell mkfs to actually check for bad 
blocks. And let me tell you, that takes FOREVER.
