What do you mean by lightweight? Are you trying to control install size, ram usage, or just the general user experience? The quickest way to improve performance is to drop Xorg and run without a UI. If that doesn't meet your needs, I'd suggest looking at one of the many alternative desktop manager options like xfce, windowmaker, or fluxbox. If you want to control install size, you can look at DSL (which uses windowmaker, iirc) or slax (which has a version that uses xfce). --Tim G.
