well, an update. As it turns out, you CAN use ethtool to change the 
settings for the forcedeth driver, even though it says the supported 
ports are MII. I was able to turn off auto-neg and force the speed and 
duplex to the needed values and my network is up and running. Hopefully 
this helps someone.
