Ubuntu doesn't use a root account at all.  Instead, the account you made
during install has permission to sudo any command.

To edit your apt configuration:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

It will prompt for a password, so enter the password for the account you
are logged into.  You will then have permission to save your edits.
