I thought TiVo offers two flavors of service now...the free one that
will let you get some listings, but doesn't offer season pass,
wishlists, and all that, and their normal pay service that lets you
use those features.

You can use TiVo without any TiVo service. It will work just like a
VCR...you can set manual recordings and all that. It used to be that
it would only tell you what time and date it recorded without TiVo
service though, but I think they changed that with the new free
service.
