Guys It never seems to fail - no matter how long I bang on a problem, the act of writing (and posting) the question gets me finally going in the right direction. I had the initrd.img for the raid pointing at /dev/md0 (/boot) instead of /dev/md1 ( / ). Problem fixed. Steve
