Nobody ever suggested that it would be wrong to point out when
somebody should have done more research before asking a question.  The
only issue is how it's done.  It's possible to reprimand somebody
without being an asshole to them.  That's all I was suggesting. 
Especially if there's no pattern of egregious behavior, which there
doesn't seem to be in this case.

(not to mention that the original post asked specifically if somebody
on the list had a knoppix cd or iso -- it didn't ask how to find a
link to download the ISO.  For all anyone knew, he didn't have
broadband and wanted to burn a copy from somebody locally so he didn't
have to wait a week for the download.  But the second poster jumped
all over him without bothering to find out).
