AFAIK all CD-R/CD-RW/CD-ROM drives made in at least the last 5 years
are standardized (someone help me with the name). They will all work
with Linux without any trouble, just plug the drive in and boot.

How much data do you want to backup? Will a CD-R/CD-RW be big enough?
I'm just thinking that the tape probably holds a lot more than a CD but
maybe the CD has enough capacity for you.

I think that you will be better off using some kind of CD.

If you still want to get the tape drive working, please tell us
how you write and read the tape and the exact error messages.
