Go for broke and try out a DVDRW (which also does CDRW)

for ~$60(single layer) - ~$70 (double layer) from new egg:

I have the NEC 2500A (single layer burner) which is the same Hardware
as the 2510 (double layer dvd burner) only the firmware is different.

The 2500 work great with liinux (I'm a gentoo dude - I'm 100% positive
it'd work with redrat..)

Subject: [TCLUG] Thank you for your assistance BUT need CD-ROM RW help now
To: tclug-list at mn-linux.org

Many thanks to all of you who so nicely took time to try to assist me
with my laptop endeavor. For multiple reasons, I have made a decision
to work with the old desktop which is a Pentium 2, 400mhz PC. I have
been able to partition it into 3 partitions - Windows 95, RH Linux
6.1, and RH Linux 9.0. It has an external 3COM modem which works on
dial-in for both Linux 6.1 and 9.0. We have successfully been able to
upgrade the S/W application to its lastest version and converted the
data for the application.

I have a problem now with my Travan tape drive - I can backup files
with no errors, but get errors when trying to restore the backed up
files. I have cleaned the tape head(s), erased and retensioned the
tapes, but still get errors. Soooo, I am contemplating replacing my
52x ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM R drive with an ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM RW drive.

I have looked at Red Hat compatibility databases and have not found
much assistance.

My question is: What manufacturer(s) and model #(s) might you
recommend I get for the replacement? I want the CD-ROM RW to work.
Any suggestions?

Again, thank you for your assistance.
