Also check /etc/modules - whichever one is listed first there will get set 
up as eth0. Or is it not loading the 3c59x module at all now?

If you have Hotplug installed, it may decide to automatically load the 
network modules for you, too - I hate those automatic loader thingies for 
servers.  :)
