gmane.org, googlegroups give free access to most newsgroups.

most, if not all, ISPs have a news feed that said ISPs customers can use 
for free. 

it seems to me that the reason usenet is not as popular anymore is because 
it is such a bandwidth sink, no matter how much you throw at it, it always 
wants more.
