What if you leave it in suspend too long and the battery dies? Not
everyone has shiny new batteries...

Syncing the disk before suspend isn't the same thing as unmounting it
cleanly. If the machine dies in suspend for whatever reason, you're
still going to be sitting through a fsck on ext2 whether it was synced
or not.
