Don't forget to remount filesystems read only (at least those that will
not prevent the machine's primary purpose).  The /usr filesystem is an
example of a filesystem that can be primarily mounted read only.  It
only needs to be mounted read/write when upgrading the system.  Also,
try shutting down any non-critical services to reduce the amount of
filesystem state changes while the backup is being done.
