I've just finished installing MySQL 4.1.8 from the rpm on the mysql
site. After battling the dependency nightmare involved I have it
installed and working. I had to uninstall many packages which depended
on mysql 3.23 (version included in core 2) and of course I cant
reinstall them now that 3.23 is gone.

I did google up some brief advice about rebuilding rpms from the
Source rpms. but I don't understand it.

Quote from http://www.tummy.com/journals/entries/scott_20041117_131449
"Caveat: the PHP rpms that come with fedora don't like integrating
with MySQL 4. Downloading the PHP source RPMs and running `rpmbuild
--rebuild` on them after MySQL 4 is installed will link them against
the proper libraries and the resulting rpms will install happily."

The package I want installed is actually a perl thing needed to use
the "mysqlhotcopy" command. (perl-DBD-MySQL-2.9003-4) I did get the
source rpm (perl-DBD-MySQL-2.9003-4.src.rpm) and tried this to
rebuild it after mysql 4.1 was installed
" rpmbuild --rebuild perl-DBD-MySQL-2.9003-4.src.rpm"
which got me a whole bunch of errors...

so my question is can I rebuild this package to work with my installed
version of mysql? other options? any other decent alternatives for
backing up live mysql databases?

PS.. If you are interested here is a list of packages I needed to
remove in order to install MySQL 4.1.8 from rpms , so don't do it
unless you REALLY need the features in mysql > 4
