It can be a good idea, but there are other ways to do it.  One way is
to use multilog which is specifically designed to never fill your
disk.  With multilog you always know exactly how much space it will
use.

I can't think of any other problems where a separate file system would
help.  Separate file systems have advantages, but in my opinion aren't
worth that much effort.
