One more thing that I forgot to mention  (sorry, I havn't been keeping 
up with this thread very well)

Does the motherboard support ACPI?  If so, try loading with out acpi 
(acpi=off) or disabling it in the bios.  My compaq laptop dies after 
kernal load sometimes and all I do is turn off acpi and it works fine then.
