Type 'knoppix 2' at the boot prompt and it boots into the command line. 
This is how I usually use it - I don't have the patience to wait for a full 
kde load. That said, its got a lot of tools for rescue tasks. It's amazing 
the amount of stuff they packed onto that cd.
