I don't know what the problem is but given that you were having problems before the linux install and also given that something is happening intermittently on boot _before_ the video card is recognized, and therefor before linux is booted, points to hardware problems. Perhaps your power supply is either going bad or is underpowered for your system. did the problem start when you added or changed hardware? Is it the same modules that fail? are they hardware diver modules? if hardware is not getting enough juice the module could fail. Just guesses, I really have no idea what the problem is. If it were my box I'd try a different power supply next. If you have another power supply to try that would be good. If it is going bad sometimes they have that funky friode smell. Power supplies are not hard to swap out if it is a standard atx. just make sure you have one beefy enough for your system and make sure you plug in everything you unplugged. If you have a second low wattage power supply, too small for your system, you could try plugging in just your mainboard to one and all your devices to the other and see if things improve.
