Question on the VPN issue. I'm running SmoothWall (yeah, yeah, not the greatest I know), and I've tried to work with one of our network guys to connect my firewall to my employer's VPN session. There's been issues however.

In working with him on this, we've followed the directions: left IP, center, Right.... yada, yada, yada. No go. I've set up about three instances, and he's sniffed the network to try and see if I'm hitting. It's been about two months now since I've tried this, but IIRC, it was hitting but couldn't authenticate.

He said that someone in our company (far more experienced than I, as I know him) was working with it. However, here's the biggest hurdle that appears to be: FreesWan doesn't work well with Nortel VPN solutions. I believe that they spent about two weeks off and on trying to get it to work. I spent about 3 days. None of us had any luck.

At last check, Nortel won't offer any support time with FreesWan. The other person's solution was to get a Nortel VPN router and connect in that way. Mine is to lug my beast of a Micron (Samsung?) laptop home and use XP to connect via VPN. PPtP if I'm behind my firewall, IPSec if I'm outside. I haven't set up tunneling yet, but I'd like to.

Anyone have personal experience with FreesWan and Nortel in combination? I don't recall the protocol Nortel uses. Suggestions on other things to try?
