Thanks all for the suggestions. I've got some ideas to go off of. My plan
is to install Red Hat 7.2 (that's supposed to be good, right?) on his home
computer. In general I expect that unless there is something seriously
wrong with our existing infrastructure it would not pay to migrate the
whole thing over especially in these lean times. As a corporate
programmer, I would normally expect to gain these sort of cost savings by
implementing free license software for *new* projects. It doesn't
nessessarily pay to retrofit an existing enterprise. Anyhow, I know that
server side application deployment is loads easier and cheaper to maintain
than client side. It just so happens that Linux and other *nix happen to
work well in those environments. Windows less so (though not impossible).

Anyway, Dean's a thrifty guy and he'll appreciate the opportunity to save
some cash. He also understand that server-side, backroom things don't have
to have a Windows GUI on them to be good. I figure that if he can get
along with a nice GUI, do e-mail and stuff he'll be set. Right now his W2K
install is all putzed out so this is a great time to try something else.
It's not as if the machine is busy doing something else right now.

Hey, does anyone have any contacts with the other council members? I've
met Natalie and I haven't even spoke to anyone else. I did get to say hi
to R.T. once (and I didn't even tell him I was running against him) but I
suppose he's way too busy being mayor and all. Biernat's my council member
so maybe I can corner him sometime (I don't think I'd ever get to touch
his machine). So who do you know in government? Heck, how about state
government? That's still accessible to real people.
