A few things to check:

Check the state of the qmail server with ps, vmstat, netstat.
Check that tcpserver is running.
Check the timeout settings in $QMAIL_DIR/control.
Check that either your internal addresses resolve or that DNS
	lookups are disabled in the tcpserver init script.
