Ask yourself three questions, if the results are negative
on any of these that is your first point for a fix:

1. Did you recompile your modules? (All of them, not
  just the ones in the main tree but ALSA &c. also)

2. If you are running with initrd, does the initrd image you
   are using have unversioned modules?

3. Are you certain that you are really booting your new kernel?
