Or if you're a Debian user, add the line "use-ssh-agent" to
/etc/X11/Xsession.options.  ssh-agent will start for you before you get
into X[1].

[1] I know, not everyone uses X, but if you do, IMHO, this is the
easiest way to get ssh-agent working.
