That's part of your problem. You clobbered your old path. Try

	PATH=$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin

instead.

See? You lost your old path, and startx couldn't find simple commands that it
needs.

I don't know anything about Quake, and very little about X, but I know a bad
path statement when I see one... :)
