Let me start with the caveat that I don't know NIS as well as I'd like
to.  We are using it at work on Solaris 2.6 and 8 as well as on Linux
and it works fairly well.  Linux does not support direct maps,
however.  We are also using netgroups to determine who has access to
what machines.
