I ran into a problem today which seems to have the same symptoms. I normally telnet to linux and start the ppp connection from the command line. Today I tried starting from kppp and it would dial and attempt to authenticate and then die. I found that I had no DNS address defined. Adding the DNS ip address provided by my ISP solved the problem. It is unclear to my why this would make a difference.
