It is derived from the FreeBSD 3.x kernel in particular.  I beleive they
have incorporated many changes from 4.x as well.  They (Apple) even hired
Jordon Hubbard (a FreeBSD core member and founder) of the FreeBSD project to
join the OSX development team.
