   Well, I found a bit of a round-about way: you can convert your MP3s
to WAVs, run the "normalize" program
(http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~cvaill/normalize/), and then convert them
back into MP3s. There is a script in the normalize package that will do
this for you. Bad news, however: you will probably lose some quality in
the process of decoding/encoding. However, for future reference, this
sounds like the way to go if you are ripping new files.
