I'm wondering why the new solution can't be developed before freezing
the old numbers, to minimize the disruption.  Has Linus tried to get
people to do that, and couldn't?  If the new solution were in place,
it would be a 'conversion' issue rather than a period of time during
which new devices couldn't be supported -- much less disruptive.
