Feel like I'm pushing this OT so changed the subject. There is a "4mb(sic)-Laptops" how-to at http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/4mb- Laptops.html. Only glanced at it, maybe what the author is suggesting is just a getty as well. And it hasn't been updated since 4/2000. Just throwin' it out there.
